SUPER DUPER HAM: DAY ONE

Like Flying Solo, this 52-page comic was made between 2003 and 2009. This spoof on DC’s Captain Marvel/Shazam featured a pig named Abe, who could say his magic word, “Spa-Bam”, and become whatever he wanted to be.

I shuffled the encounters Abe had with various heroes and villains around the city of Mammapolis, until the challenges he faced escalated like levels in a video game.

Locations in the comic were modeled after Greenpoint and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Sam Kieth’s drawing style and stop-motion puppets inspired my character design and rendering style for this project. Panel elements were drawn separately, scanned and layered together in Photoshop, as if I were doing cell animation.

The title treatment on the cover was designed by Brian Hennings.

Super Duper Ham: Day One was first self-published in 2009.
